Tyvek Art + Gelli Printing + Sewing
My recent experiments have included printmaking of leaves and plant material on painted Tyvek, layering with more Tyvek and sometimes organza, and sewing the layers together. I then use heat to melt back some of the Tyvek and synthetics. Heat applied to synthetic substrates transforms the appearance from one of fresh botanicals to a state of decay or decomposition, mimicking nature’s process of breaking down organic materials.
I often add hand-stitching, inspired by Kintsugi, the art of repairing broken pottery with lacquer, a metaphor for Kintsugi which adds strength, embraces imperfections, promotes acceptance and beauty in simplicity.
