Anne Warburton - Artist Statement

When we take the time to look at the world around us, we can find both manmade and nature's lines: straight, twisted, imperfect, tattered, threadbare. There is beauty in these timeworn lines, and a need today for moments of awe and wonder. My fibre art interpretations begin with photographing these elements close-up to capture the artistry of the affected areas: rust, corrosion, decay, weathered, crumbling. I then select and sew together fabrics and other materials to symbolize the layers of time and changes in my subject. Transforming the layers with slashing, deconstruction and heat distressing is next, revealing the characteristics beneath the surface. The final steps of shaping, stitching and embellishments highlight the beauty within.
Anne is a fibre artist and problem solver. Her passion is to capture creative insights through her art. She works mostly in stitch on fabric and paper, and embellishes with paint, metals, recycled and other materials.
Anne’s artistic journey has included studies in drawing, painting, coloured pencil techniques, bookbinding, embroidery, and the fibre arts through Ottawa School of Art, VACO, local stores, private lessons, and some self-taught. Her formal education includes event management, introductory expressive arts therapies, and learning facilitation. A love of colour, nature, and travel inspires much of her work. She has a love of learning, and continues to develop her art through experimentation and courses.
Anne has worked with seniors creating coloured pencil art, and has taught mixed media techniques to children and adults. Anne is Co-Chair of the Out of the Box Fibre Artists, chaired the Navan Fine Arts Exhibition & Sale for several years, and founded Fibre 15 in 2019 to provide a local group of local fibre artists with an environment (now online) for creating, inspiration and sharing.
