Update: Scrap Collage Exchange and Envelope Project

2/8/2015

Scrap collage piece

Voila. The finished Scrap collage piece - using paper doily at the top, sari ribbon, images on acetates/mylar, part of a poster, buttons, a few beads, and lots of embroidery. And mounted on canvas.

The theme given to us was "New Landscapes". But it looks a bit like a cupcake I think LOL.

Will I do this again next year? Probably. It was good experience as many of the materials and sent to me I would not normally have chosen, an "out of the box" kind of exercise.

And what will I do with this piece now? I have no idea.

Envelope Project

Okay, so I decided I wasn't really happy with how these envelopes were coming along (see my previous blog post). And I also realized I wasn't really enjoying the process.

So what to do to change things up. Then the "aha" moment came. I took a workshop in late January with a friend at a place out in Alfred on gelli plate printing. This is a printing process where you roll paints onto a gelli plate, add some texture, then put paper on top to create a print, and add even more designs and colours to it. Now this was fun - and fast too and the results have real potential. And for those pieces that don't turn out, you just start over using the same piece of paper. In what seemed like no time at all I had all the envelopes complete. Below is a sample of what the finished envelopes look like.

We do our exchange on February 11, so I'll come home with 21 different designs of envelopes, each the same size, then can begin the binding process to make them into a book. It will be quite interesting to see all the different types of bindings that get used by each person in this project, as well as the final look. This part is due in May - pictures on this piece to follow.

And of course all is not lost with the envelopes that I did make before - after all I do need something to practice the binding process on, so they will be used, and maybe recycled into another project. Remains to be seen.

    About Me

It's taken years to discover the medium I enjoy the most. And how what I have learned before somehow fits into what I am doing now. Even when I travel my needles and threads are with me so I can continue to create while away.

It's been wonderful being able to share my work with others and to be a part of an artistic network that continues to grow and develop.

If you have ideas you would like to suggest, please let me know. And check back regularly to my web site for updates.
